536,003 meals for children in need and we're just getting started.
Notch was founded on the belief that it's better to give than it is to receive. For us, it's more than a motto, it's a way of life and it drives just about everything we do as a company. In today's world, we're confronted with people who need help at every turn. My wife and I get a lot of joy from helping others and we saw an opportunity to make a significant impact through Notch that would far exceed our normal ability to give. It's a model called Social Entrepreneurship. It's nothing new but it has gained new-found attention from companies like Project 7, founded by Tyler Merrick and TOMS, founded by Blake Mycoskie. The premise is very simple; instead of raising money (asking people to give you money) to help a specific cause, you sell a product that people want (hopefully) and then use part of the revenue from sales towards the cause that you're trying to support.
Today, over 1 billion people in the world live on less than $2 per day and most of them lack access to food, clean water, and adequate shelter. Many of them are children. We find this fact to be intolerable and unacceptable, and we aim to put a serious dent in the problem. Rather than form our own non-profit as a subsidiary of Notch, we decided to find an organization that was already meeting this need and partner with them. We wanted to find an organization that was extremely efficient in the way they served so that as much as possible of every dollar we gave went directly to meet the need. We found just such an organization in Children's Hunger Fund. In fact, 99% of their total contributions to date (over a billion dollars in food and other aid) has gone directly to these needs. That's almost unheard of in the charity world. That means that for every dollar they receive, CHF gives 99 cents where it's needed most. Forbes.com has rated them one of the most cost effective charities around and they consistently receive top marks from organizations like Charity Navigator that monitor charities.
